, you're right, andrea. i mean, i think president obama can now go back and say look at the fourth quarter of 2012. things are starting to work. one interesting note, though, his inaugural address got lots and lots of attention. one thing that wasn't really in there in any specificity was the economy. it's a way forward on how she thinks the next right steps or what he thinks the next right steps are on the economy. there's some sort of gray area here in where he wants to head. >> now, before we get to chuck hagel, the sort of train wreck that happened yesterday, ruth marcus, the white house is coming out or hhs is coming out with new rules to liberalize the guidelines so that religious institutions are somewhat insulated, somewhat more insulateded. first of all, they're going to more broadly define religious institutions. also, give a separate provider so that the religious institutions themselves don't have to provide birth control to their employees. >> well, first of all, you said white house, and even though hhs issues these guidelines, one can be fairly sure that the white ho

ahead of john brennan's confirmation hearing to head the cia, the obama administration's drone program is drawing new scrutiny from both sides of the aisle and raising big questions about just how far the government should go in targeted assassinations without oversight from congress or from the courts. joining me now for our daily fix, msnbc contributor and "usa today" washington bureau chief. chris, first to you, i don't think there is any big question so far as to whether or not john brennan is going to be confirmed at least going into the hearing, but this is a real debate now. because of michael isikoff breaking the story and finding that white paper, and discovering that the justice department had at least september that much to the hill, some members, the 11 senators and at least three the committee asking big questions about why there isn't more oversight. >> what's fascinating is when they announced the trio of nominations, john kerry at state, chuck hagel at defense and john brennan for cia, i remember being on the show and saying i think hagel will be the most controversial

to be speaker again pretty soon. thank you, everybody. god bless you. thank you. >> president obama completing his statement to the house democrats, and right now on "draen mitchell reports" drone wars coming up on the eve of john brennan's cia hearing. the white house relents and turns over its secret memo. >> every american has the right to know when their government believes it's allowed to kill them. this idea that security and liberty are mutually exclusive, that you can have only one or the other is something i reject. >> but what about john brennan's answers on torture and secret leak investigations? the defense department on defense. the pentagon's top brass pushed back on questions about the military response in benghazi. >> are you surprised that the president of the united states never called you secretary panetta, and says how is it going? >> you know, normally in these situations -- >> did he know the level of threat that -- >> let me finish the answer. we were deploying the forces. he knew we were deploying the forces. he was being kept -- >> i hate to intript you, but i have lim

crunch. minutes from now president obama will be calling on congress to pass a short-term budget deal to delay those drastic cuts for a few more months. but today speaker boehner has already shot that idea down. sfloot house on two occasions has passed a plan to replace the sequester. it's time for the senate democrats to do their work. it's time for the president to offer his ideas about how to replace the sequester. >> out of the shadows. the house starts working on immigration reform. >> what americans deserve is a system that works a system that's accountable and puts immigrants already here on a road to earn citizenship. >> license to kill. an nbc exclusive. the justice department's secret rationale for target the killings of americans linked to al qaeda. >> one of the things i want to make sure that everybody understands is that our primary concern is to keep the american people safe, but to do so in a way that's consistent with our laws and consistent with our values. >> reaction ahead from house intelligence chair mike rogers. >>> the joke is on whom? after years of being the

? as a new leader takes over at the state department today, president obama is in minnesota at this hour trying to build pressure on congress to support his gun proposals. will he be able to overcome deep-rooted opposition? joining us for our daily fix, chuck todd, msnbc news chief, political director, and host of "the daily rundown" and "new york times" chief washington correspondent david sang ar. first to you, chuck, on guns. the president in minnesota. the white house making a very big push. the question as to why they had to react to the conspiracy they'rists who questioned his -- the white house comment about his skeet shooting at camp david zoosh well, they've always been what i would call overly reactive to they call it the beast, feeding the beast, and they mean sort of social media, the sort of advocacy media, when it's talk radio, whatever you want to call it, and this was just mother one of those instances where they felt that they saw a couple of articles that they thought were getting traction, and they thought, well, let's put out this photo, but, of course, even as david

. president obama told voters back in october that the sequester would not happen, but as it is about to become a reality, the president is calling on congress just a few minutes from now to delay those massive cuts. joining me now for our daily fix chris caliz sdmr a and managing editor of post, and nbc's capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. first to you, chris. it seems as though the president is trying one last time, perhaps it's not the last time, to take it to congress. is this going to work? >> i think what he saw, andrea, was this expectation that we had a couple of months ago, honestly, that while they would never let the sequester happen, it's this kind of across the board cut that cuts domestic, that cuts defense spending, and that politicians don't want this on either side. i think what the president and his senior team realized as well, republicans may not want it, but they seem okay to let it happen. they don't have to vote. nothing has to happen. it just -- the date comes, and the sequester happens. i think this is an attempt to say, look, we don't wa

the weather channel. meanwhile, storms afoot here in washington. as we've been saying, president obama's nominee to head the cia faced tough questioning yesterday about waterboarding during the bush years when he was at the cia and the current white house's huge expansion under his direction of targeted killings by drones. >> your view seems to be that even if we could save american lives by detaining more terrorists, using only traditional techniques, it would be better to kill them with a drone or let them go free rather than detain them. can you explain the logic in that argument? >> i respectfully disagree, senator. i never believe it's better to kill a terrorist than to detain him. we want to detain as many terrorists as possible so we can elicit the intelligence from them in the appropriate manner so that we can disrupt following terrorist attacks. >> joining us is john mclaughlin, the cia's acting director and with john hopkins school of studies. thank you for being with us. you were a career cia person, and you know the drill. it's very clear that absent anything occurring that
